Wearable sensor history

The concept of wearables has been since the dawn of civilization. Caveman held primitive tools or stones are early pieces of wearable technology, evolving into armors worn by knights, or aprons used in medieval ages. Technologies added scientific knowledge and application for practical purpose to the motion sensing. Therefore, current wearable trends of activity trackers or hearing devices arose.

Sensors in our body like skin, eyes, nose, tongue have been crucial to our survival and thereby our evolution e.g. scents picked up by our nose has been key to differentiating between a poisonous and non-poisonous fruits, taste buds in our tongue has encouraged us to eat healthy natural foods that helped our brain grow bigger and increase our mental processing power. Sensors try to get as much data as possible (just like our body), feeding into a processor for analysis in portable computing devices or the cloud (our human brain), trying to get recognize patterns using algorithms driven by Machine Learning under the Artificial intelligence umbrella (as done through generations) to make our lives easier, comfortable, and to proliferate.

Wearable technology in Industry 4.0

Modern technology terms of ‘Machine Learning’ and ‘Artificial intelligence’ have their roots in pattern recognitions. When human started settling this didn’t stop, the same thing happened with farming e.g. observing seasonal changes, position of planets on the sky. Planting seeds at the right time to reap harvest at the right time… Human have done it using sensors that are in-built, the fruits of evolutions. The human body so is with all animal species is an aggregate of very sophisticated sensor network complemented by even a more mind-boggling processing center (our brain) which we are still trying to deconstruct.

The drive in technology evolution especially will serve market needs to efficient resource management with growing population. Resources relating to food, healthcare, waste management and other environmental issues ensure our survival. The overarching industry term is Industry 4.0 (4th Industrial revolution) where sensors are a key component.

Why wearable sensors from XSENS

With 20 years of experience in single sensor and body network solutions Xsens is pushing the boundaries as the go-to solutions provider, for motion sensing technology products, application and software services. We envision varied applications of wearable sensors in Health and Sports markets (both in evolving and traditional fields). With that in mind, we introduced the Xsens DOT at CES earlier this year. Due to the situation the world is in now, e-health applications have become a ‘must-haves’ (painkiller) from ‘nice to haves’ (vitamins) concepts last year.

We also believe that Xsens DOT with its feature set would serve as an Education tool in the learning processes related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M) curriculum especially with respect to human motion tracking and mechanics. We want to encourage the budding engineers, developers, entrepreneurs to get into inertial based motion technology as early as possible in their learning process, to come up with application we have not yet imagined.

5 DOTs, millions of applications, endless possibilities!
